Cyanotype Printing – Mistakes & Fixes pt.1
Mistakes are part of the learning process in cyanotype printing. Don’t let them discourage you! Instead, use them as opportunities to grow and experiment. Here are some common mistakes and tips to avoid them.
Overexposure
Overexposure happens when the paper is left in the sun too long. This results in prints that look too dark or completely blue once washed. To fix this, decrease your exposure time carefully. Take test prints to check progress.
Underexposure
Underexposure occurs when the paper doesn’t get enough sunlight. This creates prints that are too light or unclear. Start with a longer exposure time and adjust as needed.
Under Washing
Under washing leaves yellow stains on your print. Always use cold water and wash until the water runs clear.
Over Washing
Leaving prints in water too long can cause fading. Keep washing time under 10 minutes and monitor your print closely.
Some prints, especially if they have a heavy coat of emulsion, will need extra time in the wash. But, you should always keep an eye on the print to make sure it doesn’t begin to fade from over washing.
Mistakes are normal, especially for beginners. With practice and patience, you’ll create beautiful cyanotypes. Keep experimenting and enjoy the process!
